Green Philippines Islands of Sustainability successfully conducted Cleaner Production workshop for its Phase 2 companies. A total of 48 new companies attended the three workshop sessions held last November 3, 4 and 9 at Berjaya Hotel, Makati.
The workshop started with the welcome remarks from Dr. Thomas Dielacher, Project Lead from GrAT Stenum. Dielacher discussed the project structure and what the companies can expect by participating in the project. Results of the phase 1 of implementation were also highlighted, showing the videos of success stories, such as Manila Waters, Philippines Airlines – Inflight center and Sacred Heart Medical Center from Phase 1.
Participating companies also made their “wall of Fame” showing their company name, logo, name of representatives, expectations and motivation for participating companies. These “company wall of fame” in flipcharts are posted in every workshop session.
It was followed by the discussion of topics on Sustainable mindset and Cleaner Production versus End of Pipe thinking, showing the current environmental situation, and what we can do to create this change. Cleaner Production thinking deals with Eco-Efficiency. Wastes and emissions are also materials bought with money, but not converted into products which can be sold for money and earn profit. Cleaner Production is a consistent analysis from input into output, minimizing the “wastes and emissions”, which in turn leads to both environmental and economical benefits. Mr. Joshua Rey Albarina and Mr. Wilson Baldonado presented some examples of Cleaner Production Strategies, and the actual savings generated by the previous/ECOCLUB companies.
The workshop also includes exercises to make the learning more lively and interactive. Participants were divided into groups and they were asked to analyze different scenarios and give better ecommendations using Cleaner production strategy over end-of-pipe thinking.
Another group activity is the Fun Factory exercise for Waste minimization, wherein the groups are assigned to produce quality products with the minimum waste in the Fun Factory.
Cleaner Production is the first of the series of build-up workshops for the ECOSWITCH certification. Positive feedbacks were received from the participants with regards to the delivery and applicability of the topics in their shop floor.
